Texas Renewable Energy Education Consortium

Texas consumes almost 12 percent of all energy used in the United States. In 2005, Texas’ energy consumption of over 11,500 trillion BTUs exceeded that of California (8,400 trillion BTUs), the US’s second largest energy consumer, by 38 percent. A number of factors contribute to Texas’ leadership in energy use with a big one, the hot and humid climate that dominates much of the state, being responsible for a high demand for summer air conditioning.

Historically, Texas has been a national leader in the production of petroleum products, crude oil and natural gas, and in the generation of electricity. But in the early 1990s, consumption overtook production, forcing the state to increasingly rely on outside sources of energy to meet that demand. (more…)

The Great Pacific Garbage Patch

Friday, July 11th, 2008

It’s NOT an Urban Legend about the world’s largest plastic trash islands
floating in the Pacific. There is actually two, an eastern floats between
California and Hawaii, and a western located off of the Pacific side of
Japan.  Their combined area covers two times the size of Texas.

Run Your Car on Water and Gas!

checked out or purchased.  Well, I purchased this and was going to wait (more…)

Petroleum-Based Cleaners

I had a comment asking how to tell if your dishwashing liquid is petroleum-based.
Well, good question, since the major brands don’t list the ingredients on the
bottles. What the bottles are quick to say is no phosphates and biodegradable
anionic surfactants (whew! That twisted my tongue just typing it). You’re lulled
into thinking all’s right with the major brands world until you realize what they (more…)

Did Ya Know!

Sunday, June 15th, 2008

Today is a few tidbits that I thought might be useful information.

There are 49 million disposable diapers dumped into landfills every DAY and it takes
500 years for them to decompose. That means your great, great, great (you get the
picture) grandchildren’s diapers will start before your baby’s diapers disappear.
Cloth diapers are chemical free and switching to cloth will reduce waste by over
1/2 ton per baby per year. (more…)
