449694main_oil_slick_690As the news on the astounding amount of oil escaping from the from the Deepwater Horizon wellhead in the Gulf of Mexico grows more bleak by the hour, another oil rig accident about 50 miles (80.4 kilometers), from the first disaster site has taken place. The Coast Guard reported Friday (April 30), that a barge mounted oil drilling rig on its way to a scrap yard overturned about 80 miles (128.7 kilometers), west-southwest of New Orleans. It has the capacity to carry about 20,000 gallons of diesel fuel, but Coast Guard officials did not know how much fuel was on board. Although no fuel leaks have been found (heard that before), as a precaution, 500 feet (152.4 meters), of boom has been set up around the rig to contain any fuel leaks. (more…)
