Unless You Insist On Cutting Your Nose Off To Spite Your Face

A recently released analysis of global surface temperature conducted by NASA’s Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS), shows 2009 was tied for the second warmest year for the Northern Hemisphere and the warmest year for the Southern Hemisphere since modern records began in 1880.

This is happening while the sun is currently in a period of abnormally low solar activity, yet global warming is continuing.

January 2000 to December 2009 was the warmest decade on record. Throughout the last three decades, the GISS surface temperature record shows an upward trend of about 0.2°C (0.4°F) per decade. Except for a leveling off between the 1940s and 1970s a clear warming trend is present and persistent.

Planet Green’s Greensburg Series

February, 2009

At the Merhoff home Mary gets her three little sleepy ones up, dressed, fed, then off to another full day of school and extra curricular activities. Which makes it very hard for this working mom to go all the way to Pratt, 30 miles away for grocery shopping. So she is very excited about Dillons the Greensburg grocery store about to re-open.

Greensburg had a population of 1,500 people before the storm, between 700 and 800 are already back. Steve Hewitt believes to get to the population back to pre-storm levels, the business incubator, schools, hospital, and streetscape needs to be completed. For people to see the reality of Greensburg coming back will motivate them to return with their business’ and residents. (more…)

“The Future Is Now”

For those of you that do not get the Planet Green channel, let’s start with the narrative given at the start of the program by Leonardo DiCaprio:

On May 4, 2007 Greensburg Kansas was destroyed by EF-5 tornado. Left with nothing, this small farming community took an amazing leap of faith, they decided to build the greenest town in America. Eco-friendly homes and business’s began to rise out of the rubble, but the challenges have been enormous. Main Street is still a work in progress, civic buildings are just now being built and some of the townspeople continue to wait for new homes. Yet, the people of Greensburg remain undaunted, they are pushing forward everyday to accomplish their dream. (more…)
