A Better Way?

Sunday, November 30th, 2008

Looks like T. Boone and Walmart are in the lets make a deal phase.  Walmart
has announced it would buy 15 percent of the electricity for its Texas
facilities from Duke Energy wind farm.  That 15 percent equates to 226
million kilowatt hours or 18,000 homes could be powered for a year.

Walmart is buying the power and accompanying renewable energy credits
beginning in April from a Duke Energy wind farm in Notrees, Texas. The power
will supply WalMart’s 360 facilities within the competitive Texas grid. (more…)

How bad is Aircraft Emissions?

Wednesday, October 8th, 2008

It’s become almost a reflex to bash aviation’s role in climate change. Passenger
planes are big, they emit stuff into the atmosphere, so they must be bad. It’s
true, but it’s not quite that simple.

Last week, climate and atmospheric scientists from the US and Europe presented
research to a group of aviation types gathered at the Royal Society of London.
Much of their focus was on nitrogen oxide (NOx), and what they found is that
simply dismissing NOx as just another nasty greenhouse gas is not only bad
science, but could also be unwise policy. (more…)

What Satellite Do you Use?

Thursday, August 14th, 2008

I am going off topic today thanks to my satellite company deciding to cut me off
for a 24 hour period yesterday. Since this was my first experience with paying
hard earned money to be unjustly punished, pardon me while I rave on!

Yesterday morning, I poured my first cup of coffee, posted my article and went
back to correct something when I received the deadly web acceleration error.
Since I had not rebooted my laptop or reset the modem in a while, I cold booted
both of them. Everything lit up like a charm. I tried accessing the internet
and again received the web acceleration error. So, Stupid me, decided to call
customer support to find out the nature of the problem. (more…)

Recycling – CFLs – Mercury

Wednesday, August 13th, 2008

Go to earth911.org to find a recycling site near you. Just type in what you
want to recycle or hit ‘more’ and select from the list, add your zip, city,
or state and hit ‘go’. Now don’t expect to find many places that recycle CFLs.
Because of the mercury worries involved with these bulbs, those that do will
normally only accept spent CFLs from their area residents.

There are numerous places on the internet that will ship you a kit to hold
your spent fluorescent and/or HIDs (high intensity discharge lamps), etc.
Then when full you ship back via a ground carrier like FedEX (prepaid). The (more…)

Summer Cool

Sunday, July 20th, 2008

Half of all heat enters your home through the windows.  Using a
thick shade or window film, especially over the west facing windows can
save up to 15 percent on your cooling bill.  OR shade those windows from
the outside by planting trees or installing window awnings.  Another way
is using solar screens on the outside of the windows. (more…)

Did Ya Know!

Sunday, June 15th, 2008

Today is a few tidbits that I thought might be useful information.

There are 49 million disposable diapers dumped into landfills every DAY and it takes
500 years for them to decompose. That means your great, great, great (you get the
picture) grandchildren’s diapers will start before your baby’s diapers disappear.
Cloth diapers are chemical free and switching to cloth will reduce waste by over
1/2 ton per baby per year. (more…)
