Where to take your CFLs

Good news on the environment front! The Home Depot will now accept unbroken
consumer compact fluorescent lightbulbs (CFLs) at all locations. The service
is free and the first such offering made so widely available in this country,
according to the retail chain.

Customers can simply hand over any expired, unbroken CFLs to the clerk behind
the returns desk. The bulbs will go to an environmental management company
responsible for coordinating CFL packaging, transportation and recycling to
maximize safety and ensure environmental compliance. (more…)

The Energy Black Hole

The U.S. Department of Energy says you are paying about $100.00 a year for nothing and the EPA estimates that this nothing consumes $4 billion worth of power each year. Equivalent to the power generated by 12 power plants.

This energy Black Hole is the total of all those appliances that still draw power even when the power buttons are switched “off”. The average house hold has between 20-25 of these appliances that have electronic controls or smart features that still pull energy while “playing possum.” (more…)

EPA Releases 2006 Recycling Estimates

According to the EPA (Enviromental Protection Agency), Americans produced 251
million tons of municipal solid waste in 2006. That’s 4.5 pounds a day for every man,
woman, and child in the country. The good news is 82 million tons of that waste was
recycled or composted. Good show people!

The materials recycled in 2006 the EPA estimates as follows:
