Synthetic Chemicals To Avoid

Going green has caused many people to begin reconsidering the nature of owning a home. More homeowners than ever are taking seriously the necessity of making critical upgrades, including the switch to Duro Last roofing and other big home upgrades. Many people are also reconsidering the household products they use, as the vast majority of them contain dozens of different hazardous chemicals, the effects of which are not fully known. The following is an overview of a few of the chemicals you should make an extra effort to avoid:


What is it? Anti-bacterial agent used in hospitals and food processing.

What is it found in? Soaps, cleaners, toothpaste, deodorant, face wash.

Why is it dangerous? It is an endocrine disruptor that may cause obesity, diabetes, and cancer.

Bisphenol A (BPA)

What is it? A chemical used to soften plastics for product packaging and lining.

What is it found in? You can find BPA on the shelves of virtually every major retailer, in their baby bottles, water bottles, cans, and plastic containers. It’s is one of the harder chemicals to avoid, but more companies, including Wal-Mart, are releasing BPA-free products.

Why is it dangerous?  As with triclosan, high levels of BPA will messes up your natural hormones and endocrine system and may cause obesity, diabetes, and cancer. Recent studies have shown that it may cause cancer in lab rats.

Perfluoroalkyl acids

What is it? Chemicals used for non-stick and water-repellant product needs.

What is it found in? The so-called C8 chemicals are found in many ‘consumer-friendly’ household pots, pans, and skillets.

Why is it dangerous? It creates something called serum lipids, which lead to high cholesterol and other possible dangerous effects.


What is it? Chemical used to make plastics more flexible.

What is it found in? Solvents, cosmetics, perfumes. Virtually anything traditionally used as makeup will contain high levels of phthalates.

Why is it dangerous? It disrupt natural hormones and may be linked to sexual dysfunction, breast cancer and obesity.

Polybrominated Flame Retardants

What is it? Chemicals used to protect common household furniture from catching fire.

What is it found in? A variety of household furnishings, including upholstery, plastics, and mattresses.

Why is it dangerous? PFRs may cause brain disease and genital deformity.

The jury is out on some of these chemicals. We don’t know for absolute sure that they will cause permanent long term diseases. But enough evidence is in suggesting that they are serious health hazards that it just makes sense to avoid them. Why risk your life on a plastic container or chair cover?

    Thanks for sharing this great article at such a relevant time. Recently the FDA found alarming levels of arsenic in our apple juice, lipstick, granola bars and more! These chemicals are known for their dangerous effects on our bodies. Keep up the great work.

    Such a great post! It scary to see the sheer number of chemicals that are already out there and to know that more are being created daily is truly frightening. Over the last couple of years, I’ve been able to switch out most of the products in my home for more natural alternatives. I’ve done essentially the same thing with my diet and found that I feel so much healthier and have more energy than ever. Preservatives and chemicals are so prominent in the diets of many Americans and unfortunately the only way to combat that is through education, which will take time. Nevertheless, I feel as if we are that path to re-educating the masses, and that is something to be optimistic about. Great post!
