Let The Children See The Stars

The City That Can Look To The Sky, Reduced Their Energy Cost, And Improved Their Eco-Footprint

starry-nightOn October 27, 2009 in the southwestern section of Toulouse, France newly installed lamp posts were energized. Starting with a greater than 500 meter section of the Allée Camille-Soula. It’s a very busy street which runs between a sports stadium and a university (Institut de Mécanique des Fluides), in this fourth largest city in the country. The ubiquitous computing (‘ubicomp’) lights are equipped with sensors that detect heat from human bodies. The heat causes the strength of the light to double for ten seconds, returning to a standard ‘dim’ mode when nobody is around. As a result, the energy consumption of night lighting is cut by around 50% with the added benefit of cutting night time light pollution. Unrestricted street lighting is not only a drain on energy resources, but can interfere with the migration patterns of birds, insects and mammals.

“Wherever there is a significant urban density, this could make a big difference,” said Alexandre Marciel, the deputy mayor in charge of Works, Highways, Sanitation and Lighting, “Nothing like this exists anywhere in the world. We pretty much built the technology ourselves.” As he should be, Marciel is proud of this technology developed by his Toulouse Highways Department.Toulouse-debuts-heat-sensitive-steet-lights_header_image

Every city on Earth has the need to cut energy consumption. And every child of the city has the right to see the stars – all of them – from horizon to horizon.

An ingenious bunch of city leaders and engineers in France have shown us how to make an outstanding contribution to reducing our carbon emissions. Now is the time to follow their lead – all around the world.

…. as the green future unfolds.

we all need to reduce our carbon emissions, what better way, but to look for alternative source like renewable power supply and fuel. Thank for your concern for our environment and for sharing this with all people.

That is absolutely great! So simple, yet nobody thought of it before. I just hope that the system is reliable and that you don’t have to walk through darks streets half of the time, when the detection is not working well.

Hi Luc … Point taken but I believe they have enough backup so that does not happen. 😀
