On Christmas Eve, an expectant Colorado mom went into cardiac arrest during labor and died, along with her baby. But miraculously, both managed to revive.
New Year’s Resolution!
Just thought I’d share
my New Year’s resolutions
with you…
I will respond to all e-mail
(except chain letters)
in a timely manner.
I will learn to cook something
both low-fat AND delicious.
I will cease and desist
any and all bad habits
for an entire year.
(or at least until January 2nd)
I will do laundry on a regular basis
before it becomes
a possible fire hazard.
I will pick one place
to put my keys and the remote
so that I don’t spend half my life
running around like an idiot,
looking for them.
I will seek true enlightenment
and the meaning of life.
(while occasionally
remembering to floss.)
And my #1 resolution
is to always appreciate
great people like you.
Travelers on Germany’s A9 Autobahn are likely to do some double-takes this holiday. That giant light isn’t an alien–it’s the world’s largest spinning Christmas star.
Power giant Siemens contracted multimedia artist Michael Pendry for the massive project done in partnership with Munich City Utilities. A crew attached 3,000 tiny, colored LEDs on each of three turbine blades using special adhesives. The lights glow in different patterns as the blades rotate, putting on a show evenings and early mornings through January 6, 2010. Since the turbine is part of a local smart grid system, clean energy is powering the lights.

Vertical wind turbines put pressure on bearings, but one company, Enviro Energies, has a better idea: maglev or magnetic levitation of the turbine so that it will turn, not on bearings that need lubrication and servicing, but on a virtually frictionless force field of magnetism. In addition, Enviro sees its new vertical turbine as suitable for city rooftops, as its design takes even light wind currents from any direction and converts them to usable electrical power. My father lives in a little cabin on Junior’s (my niece – named after me), land. The cabin’s builders in what can only be described as a cranial-rectal infarction, put the 30 gallon hot water heater in the attic where it promptly burnt out after less than a years use. (more…)
A Shameless Distraction From The Reality That Faces Earth
In November thousands of private e-mails were published on the Internet when a computer hacker breached the security of the University of East Anglia’s Climatic Research Unit (CRU) database in the UK.
The stolen data flew lickity-split around the news outlets and web sites skeptical about climate change. Even here in the US on Capitol Hill, it has given new ammo to opponents of climate change legislation. And then there’s Fox News calling the hacker a “whistle-blower”. While on his Fox News show, Sean Hannity falsely claimed the stolen emails show that the scientists “were certainly fudging” climate data; as an example, Hannity read from an email from CRU scientist Phil Jones in which he employed the word “trick” to describe his methods. In fact, the word “trick” has been grossly misinterpreted and refers to, as climate expert Bob Ward writes, “Scientists say ‘trick’ not just to mean deception. They mean it as a clever way of doing something — a short cut can be a trick. (more…)
