Going Green Means Removing Those Rose Colored Glasses

“Teach your children what we have taught ours, that the earth is our mother. Whatever befalls the earth befalls the sons of the earth. The earth does not belong to man; man belongs to the earth. Man did not weave the web of life; he is merely a strand in it. We do not inherit the earth from our ancestors; we borrow it from our children.”
– Chief Seattle, more than 150 years ago.

pollutionGreenhouse Effect – The rise in temperature that the Earth experiences because certain gases in the atmosphere (water vapor, carbon dioxide, nitrous oxide, and methane, etc.) trap energy from the sun. Without these gases, heat would escape back into space (think Mars). Because of how they warm our world, these gases are referred to as greenhouse gases. Making these gases in the atmosphere behave much like the glass panes in a greenhouse, letting in light but keeping the heat from escaping. Without the greenhouse effect, the Earth would not be warm enough for humans to live, (Earth’s average temperature would be about 60°F colder). But if the greenhouse effect becomes stronger, it could make the Earth warmer than usual. Even a little extra warming may cause problems for humans, plants, and animals. Some scientist say an increase of 5 1/2°F (3°C) could be the tipping point.

Global Warming – A gradual warming of the earth’s worldwide surface temperature caused by the emission of gases that trap the sun’s heat in the earth’s lower atmosphere. The burning of fossil fuels releases carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, and other greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. The long-term effects are coming in the melting of polar ice and glaciers. But a powerful trend in Atlantic hurricane data indicates we can already see the impact.

In the western United States over the past few decades, wildfires have/are burning more area for longer periods of time. Scientists have correlated the rampant blazes with warmer temperatures and earlier snow melt.

Global average sea levels should rise 8 to 34 inches by the year 2100.

The pumping of natural underground water reservoirs in California is causing the ground to sink up to 4 inches (11 centimeters) per year in places. A problem repeated all over the world.

Once hunted to the brink of extinction, humpback whales have made a dramatic comeback in the North Pacific Ocean over the past four decades.

Not long ago, the air in Mexico City was so bad birds fell dead in mid-flight. But the views of this capital city are cleaner these days, thanks to restrictions on driving and industry. Nitrogen dioxide, sulfur dioxide and ozone pollution has been slashed in half and carbon monoxide and lead particle levels are down by 90%. ….. Way to go, Mexico!!

A landfill in Florida will soon be using Plasma-Arc Technology to vaporize its garbage at 10,000°F. The 3,000 tons of trash burned daily will generate enough electricity to power 36,000 homes.

Americans save 855,000,000 gallons of gas a year by taking public transportation.

Each commuter train passenger can reduce their carbon footprint by greater than 65% every time they ride. Switzerland is the most railway friendly country in the world.

German solar industry has generated 10,000 jobs in production, distribution and installation.
