A Green Dream Vacation

swiss-2I need a vacation and if I had the means to go, I would take a trip to Switzerland. I have always wanted to see this country ever since my 5th grade Geography teacher brought in some Swiss chocolate. I was a totally enthralled as a youngster munching chocolate while hearing all about the Alps. The highest mountain that I have seen to date is Pikes Peak by driving up to the top and seeing forever. I would love to see the Alps but maybe not drive up to the top!

I would probably take one of the trains that runs throughout the country to go and see those Alps. After all, the Swiss are the most railroad friendly country in the World. And every time, a passenger that rides the rail, reduces their carbon footprint by greater than 65%. If we all could be just as committed to commuter rail transportation as the Swiss, just think of the amount of greenhouse gases that could be eliminated from our atmosphere. How refreshing is that?

swiss-oneI do not know if it is because of the absolute beauty of their country, but the Swiss have long been aware for the need to protect their environment. For instance, in 1876, they passed the Federal Forestry Law. One of the first pieces of environmental legislation in the World. In 1953, the Swiss incorporated environmental protection into their federal Constitution. From strict standards for vehicle exhaust emissions to recycling to water quality, the Swiss have ensured that their country is very green and sustainable in many ways. But it still just astounds me to know that a government would have the forethought to pass laws for the protection of trees back in 1876, that is truly commendable.

So, what season would be best to go to sustainable Switzerland? Do I stay in a resort or hotel? As I certainly do not have to worry about who is green, they all are.  Decisions, decisions!

As the green future unfolds…..

I’ve always wanted to go to Switzerland too. I think it’s because of what I’ve seen on TV and in the movies. I’ve learned a lot about what you’ve written here too and it makes me want to go even more!
