Eco Friendly Furniture – Green Bar Stools Anyone?

By Caroline Smith of www.GetBarStools.com

barstool_1Green living is all very well when it comes to everyday activities. We all know we should turn off the tap when brushing our teeth, put our groceries in reusable bags and recycle everything we can. Earth friendly cleaning products, organic food and non-toxic toiletries are becoming commonplace in stores. But when it comes to one-off big purchases, such as furniture, it can be difficult to know where to look for green options.

When making any eco friendly purchase, there are always several factors to think about. What is a product made of? Where do the raw materials come from? What is the manufacturer’s attitude to sustainability?

Encouragingly, I’ve recently managed to find three furniture companies that manufacture eco friendly bar stools. So, if you’re looking for some green bar stools for your breakfast bar or games room, read on…

Conventionally made new furniture can be detrimental to indoor air quality as it off-gasses over time. Off-gassing occurs when VOCs are released into the air and has been associated with sick building syndrome. Many conventional adhesives and finishes have high VOC levels and off-gas to some degree. The intensity is greatest in new furniture. Formaldehyde, which can cause skin and eye irritation and breathing issues in some individuals, is often used in new furniture. Therefore, it’s advisable to check before you buy that a product has a non-toxic, zero VOC finish. Look for the Greenguard Certification label. Knoll bar stools are Greenguard certified, which means they are classed as being low-emitting and therefore better for healthy indoor air quality.

Another consideration is the sustainability and lifespan of the materials the bar stools are made from. For example, metal stools made from recycled aluminum drink cans, such as those made by Emeco, are a good green choice. The aluminum has been recycled rather than sent to landfill, plus the stools come with a lifetime guarantee. Emeco even claims the stools are such high quality they will last over 150 years! At least you won’t have to worry about them falling apart after a few years of use.

bar-stoolIf you’re thinking about buying wooden bar stools, look for items that carry the FSC logo. This globally recognized symbol certifies the wood has come from a sustainably managed source. Calligaris is a well-know Italian company that makes bar stools from FSC certified wood.

All of these bar stool manufacturers – Knoll, Emeco and Calligaris – have demonstrated a strong commitment to socially and environmentally responsible business practices. If you want to buy some eco bar stools for your home, you can see a selection of their products at Get Bar Stools.

Please feel free to leave comments as all are welcome! 🙂

Thank you for introducing Caroline to us. This is a fabulous posts on increasing our awareness.

I like the thought of things (bar stools included) being made with recycled cans. I can’t begin to imagine how many end up in the landfills, even though many states have can recycling programs.
