A Green Friendly Innovative Dwelling
Visualize your idea of a mobile home … now get ready to be blown away!
On Saturday May 2, Maryville, Tennesse based Clayton Homes, the largest manufacturer of modular homes in the U.S., officially introduced its i-house. A green-friendly innovation from a company that has sold 1.5 million homes on wheels since its start in 1934. The ‘i’ stands for innovation, inspiration, intelligence and integration and it doesn’t hurt that the layout of the long main “core” house and a separate box-shaped guestroom-office “flex room” resemble the letter “i” and its dot.
The i-house went on sale nationwide May 2, conceived as a moderately priced, energy efficient, “plug and play”, prefab dwelling, with decks on the ground level and on the roof of the detached ‘flex room’. Designers hope the model will attract environmentally conscious homebuyers, retain current pre-fab homeowners, and attract new buyers to that market sector.
The house comes in two packag es: the $74,900, 723 square feet i-house I, and the $93,300, 1,023 square foot i-house II. Both homes can be configured in at least seven different ways and come with a number of standard features, including galvanized metal roofing, corrugated steel siding, a butterfly roof with rainwater collection, and non-VOC paints. Customers can also tack on solar panels, tankless water heaters, and low-flow faucets for a price. The detached flex room is 268 square feet has 1 bath and comes in at a base price of $26,600.
The reasonably priced, energy-efficient, Clayton i-house features include:
Standard Features:
* Energy Star appliances
* Low-emission paint
* Compact fluorescent lighting
* Water-saving appliances
* Energy efficient windows
* Rainwater catchment system
* And much, much more
Optional Features:
* Solar panels
* Bamboo floors
The key cost difference is from the savings Clayton achieves by building homes in volume in green standardized factories with very little waste. Clayton has four plants in Oregon, Tennessee, California and New Mexico geared up for i-house production.
Now what’s that do to your mental picture of ‘Green Acres Trailer Park’ ?!

There are several compamnies doing green pre-fab homes. KSU even had students draw concept houses that were in the 750-1,250 sq ft home to fit on different size lots. It was based on Greensburg, but was meant to fit anywhere. So a lot is being done on this type of deal. But it’s all good ideas.

Hi Heath … Yes, and some of us are showcasing some of these designs so that folks will have a variety and price range to choose from. It is fun is it not?

That’s neat. We’ve been talking about getting a trailer and converting it for use as an office/dog kennel on property …

Hi Linda,
I LOVE the upper deck. That is too cool. This is the first time I’ve heard about this and noted they have a plant in Oregon. I’ll have to check them out. With the affordable price and all of the “green” features, it sounds like an ideal type of home for anyone who is looking to reduce their carbon footprint and to downsize.

Hopefully one of the new frontiers in greener homes will be improvements to modern septic systems to reduce nitrate output. I know many parts of the country have city sewers but for those that don’t one of the major sources of pollution and non “green” problems is in waste.

Hi Mark … You bet! I am not sure that there has been any innovations on the nitrate but there has been improvements on the septic systems.

Linda, this i-house concept is very good, as the price also seem reasonable enough. Honestly, I would consider to own it, if I can afford it in the near future!

Hi Linda! Missed this last night, but glad I’m back sooner
What a great concept! I’ll have to go over to see what it’s about, either I read too fast or… The square footage is great, but just think you add a couple of those “extra” rooms on – space ‘em far enough apart and everyone could have their own room LOL! (Can you see where my mind is this morning….!)

Hi Qi … Yes, you will probably have to import but you never know, Canada or UK may have a company similar to these guys. Thank you!

That is simply amazing! Considering how over priced the housing market is right now, it’s such a tempting idea to simply build simply but eco-friendly!
Great post!

That certainly is a fantastic looking mobile home – it is amazing what they can do with a little thought to design. I recently saw an absolutely beautiful home that was being used as the office for a housing project that was going up – turns out it was a converted double wide trailer! No one would know the difference.
