The Top Ten Greenhouse Gases

Sunday, May 31st, 2009

As PopSci.com So Eloquently Put It:

earth-simulatorDespite all the talk about carbon capture, carbon footprints and carbon trading, carbon dioxide only causes nine to 26% of the greenhouse effect. That means that the majority of warming results from gases with a much lower media profile than the paparazzi-trailed starlet of global warming, CO2. In honor of last weeks’ report in the Journal of Geophysical Research, which identified a brand new greenhouse gas, we count down the gases that bring us bikini weather in Antarctica and beachfront property in Montana.

10. Sulfuryl Fluoride: The new kid on the block, MIT scientists identified this chemical as a greenhouse gas on March 11th, 2009. Used as a fumigant, Dow Chemicals produces sulfuryl fluoride to kill termites. The chemical, which is highly inert, has a lifetime of up to 40 years, and traps 4,800 times more heat per molecule than CO2. The chemical only exists in 1.5 parts per trillion in the atmosphere, but according to the recent Journal of Geophysical Research, that number is going up by 5 percent a year. (more…)

Laugh Your Way To A Cleaner Earth

slide2graphU.S. greenhouse gas emissions are increasing rapidly: Up 16% between 1990 to 2005. The fastest way for each of us to reduce our carbon footprint is to change our use of vehicles. The best way to do that is a vehicle that uses little or no gasoline. So why not exchange that planet-choker on wheels with a vehicle that will drastically reduce your carbon footprint as well as relieve urban noise and congestion and put a grin on your face at the same time! Eco-partnership with Sister City Mianzhu, China

December 2008

antiquesBuilt in 1915 the S.D. Robinett Building was the only surviving building on Main Street. The Goodmans purchased the Robinett building after losing their antique store of eight years in the tornado. Presently their business is temporarily located 27 miles away in Kensley, Ks. They are renovating as energy efficient as possible with two floors to heat and cool, up stairs for their apartment, down stairs the store. All the while preserving the last remaining land-mark of Main Street. Old pictures of the building and Main Street are found. (more…)

Give Your Furniture a Green Makeover with Slipcovers

By Caroline Smith of GetSlipcovers.com

stretch_suede_soloBeing green is all about saving energy, reducing waste, recycling and reusing. When it comes to old sofas and chairs, using slipcovers is a green way to give them a new lease of life and keep them out of landfill. I don’t think there’s any excuse to throw away old furniture just because you don’t like the look of the upholstery. Whether it’s the color or pattern that isn’t to your taste, or the fabric is worn or stained, as long as the seat is comfortable to sit on, it still has plenty of life left in it. (more…)

“The Future Is Now”

kankas-tornado_mgFor those of you that do not get the Planet Green channel, let’s start with the narrative given at the start of the program by Leonardo DiCaprio:

On May 4, 2007 Greensburg Kansas was destroyed by EF-5 tornado. Left with nothing, this small farming community took an amazing leap of faith, they decided to build the greenest town in America. Eco-friendly homes and business’s began to rise out of the rubble, but the challenges have been enormous. Main Street is still a work in progress, civic buildings are just now being built and some of the townspeople continue to wait for new homes. Yet, the people of Greensburg remain undaunted, they are pushing forward everyday to accomplish their dream. (more…)
