Your Very Own Seed Vault

svalbardThe Norwegian government tunneled 400 feet into an Arctic mountain to build the Svalbard Global Seed Vault. Guarded behind two security doors and two airlocks, the vault celebrated its first birthday February 26, with the addition of 90,000 seed samples. Which included 32 varieties of potatoes, 3,800 samples of wheat and barley, and 20,000 backup copies of seeds from the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The vault has stockpiled more than 400,000 samples over the past year, and can accommodate 4.5 million samples total.

The underground vault is designed to weather just about every doomsday scenario, including terrorists, nuclear war, and floods of biblical proportions. It serves as a heavy-duty backup for gene banks around the world, which strive to save humanity (and our food supply) from the scourges of monoculture and environmental catastrophes.

This is wonderful and very necessary for all of mankind. But, say something bad like that happens? And say you are in Australia, Indonesia, or Texas (Oh, Lordy!). Your are not going to be able to just jump in the family car and take a road trip to the Arctic. And what are you going to do on arrival? Form a line to the left of the seed vault door and expect the Norwegian government to pour a little extra into your hands when you say, “Please sir, may I have more”.

bucketBut worry not my little Louis Pasteur fans — you know! — “Chance favors the prepared mind”. Because now you have the “chance” to get your very own seed vault, already “prepared”. (Ok, I’ll stop). This week Heirloom Organics put their Seed Vault on sale, (I didn’t even know they had these!). This is the same Heirloom Organics that is advertised on the left column of this site and has proven to provide reliable, organic, 100% non-hybrid seeds. (FYI: You MUST use non-hybrid seeds in order to save seeds from your crops for future planting.)

Chosen for varieties that will grow in all zones. The Heirloom Organics Seed Vault is processed for the long term by utilizing advanced methods for seed packaging and storage according to the US Dept. of Agriculture (USDA), which increases the maximum shelf life 7+ years. Heirloom Organics is the only supplier of seeds that has studied and implemented these methods developed by the USDA.

vegfruEach Heirloom Organics Seed Vault has a total of 22 varieties of Non-Hybrid seeds that will produce many hundreds of pounds of food from one compact container, plant over an acre or store it for years. Feed your family and friends this year and into the future and get the best germinating seeds available. Also included are detailed growing instructions for each variety and includes helpful information on harvesting of seed stock for the following year.

Grows everywhere (most varieties)
Year-round growing (indoor and out)
Pickling varieties for food storage
Highest nutrition in least amount of space
Window/container varieties for tight spaces (city, rooftop, balcony)
Heirloom Organics said that when the Seed Vault goes retail it will sell for $210.00. Purchased in individual packs, these same seeds could very well cost you over $700.00.

But better still, go here and get the Vault at their online special price of $99.00 (plus $12.00 shipping and handling).

Here’s the 22 Varieties:
Collard Greens – Corn – Broccoli – Cabbage – Green Beans – Beets – Mustard Greens – Buttercrunch Lettuce – Leaf Lettuce – Cucumber – Kale – Spinach – Squash: Yellow Crookneck – Sweet Peas – Radishes – Romaine Lettuce – Swiss Chard – Beefsteak Tomato – Cherry Tomato – Turnips – Watermelon – Zucchini

Sounds like a pretty cool idea to me.
