Six Earth Angels

Need A Hero? Focus Earth Finds SIX Saving Our Planet.

On Sunday, April 19 at 9pm ET/PT, Planet Green will air an hour long Focus Earth special. Bob Woodruff will circle the globe to meet six courageous heroes fighting on the frontlines for our planet’s environmental survival.

From the villages of Kenya where lives are being saved “one seed” at a time … to the cities of China where one American boy hopes to change a nation… and to an American “Main Street”, where a corporate maverick is helping usher in new sustainable ways of doing business. These six innovators are harnessing the wind, and exploring the depths of our oceans, each with a brave mission of change, a unique message of hope, and an inspiring vision of how we can protect our planet. The environmental visionaries included in this special edition of Focus Earth include:

maathaiProfessor Wangari Maathai, Phd is an international icon for her relentless struggle for environmental conservation and human rights. She is the first environmentalist, and the first African woman, to win the Nobel Peace Prize (2004). This “Tree Woman of Africa”, as she’s affectionately known, is the founder of the Green Belt Movement (GBM), a former member of parliament, a recognized representative of the United Nations on several environmental campaigns, as well as the author of several books.

a9c1ddf296_phillipePhilippe Cousteau Jr., 28, is raising the profile of his sea-faring family to new heights all in the name of ocean conservation. He is co-founder with his sister Alexandra of EarthEcho International, an environmental advocacy group. He is also host of the Discovery/BBC series Oceans and founder of the consulting firm Azure Worldwide, which is currently advising former AOL chief Steve Case on his new, $800 million sustainable village Cacique in Costa Rica.

adam3In 2004, Adam Werbach, charismatic “golden boy” of the environmental movement and at one time the youngest President of the Sierra Club, declared in a speech before 250 leaders of the most influential organizations that the environmental movement was dead. “I’m done calling myself an environmentalist” he told the stunned crowd, expressing his frustration with the movement’s inability to connect with the average American, its scare tactics and, most critically, its ineffectiveness in the face of the rising tide of environmental disaster. Since then, Werbach has helped the country’s largest retailer, Wal-Mart, move into the realm of sustainable business practices and he has formed the world’s largest sustainability agency in Saatchi & Saatchi S.

4395641Taylor Francis is a 16 year old Al Gore protege who has given his own environmental PowerPoint presentation to over 10,000 mostly high school students. His passion for educating his peers about the environment knows no borders. He has traveled to China twice to deliver his global warming warning to students (most recently in June 2008) and continues to speak, organize and educate his peers on protecting the environment. Taylor is focused on China as the key to climate change as it holds the key to decelerating the rate of change.

hermansen-sorenIt began in 1997, when the government of Denmark held a contest to promote innovation in the environment. The residents of Samso, a small Danish island in the North Sea , submitted a plan to show how they could wean themselves off of fossil fuels. When they won the contest, few thought much of it, except for Soren Hermansen. The environmental studies teacher at the Samso Energy Academy thought the plan had promise. Facing tremendous challenges, one by one he convinced his friends and neighbors to become shareholders in the 21 wind turbines that now generate more electricity than the island needs. Today, Samso is self sufficient with renewable energy and each month they even sell surplus energy back to the mainland for a profit. Nations from all over the world look at Samso as an example of how to implement wind power, and Hermansen as one individual who had an incredible impact.

The sixth of our heroes will be revealed when the program airs Sunday night….. So, don’t miss it……. There will be a test……. It’s easy, just tell me what you thought of it, in your own words….. I’ll grade on a curve.

Hi Linda – I don’t think we get the channel Green Planet. I’m going to look for it on Hulu and see if I can catch the rerun. It’s sounds like a great show with many caring souls.

In this case, these heroes are much more “Real” than those in the NBC drama series, Linda! Honestly, I’m very impressed with that 16-year-old guy, Taylor Francis. He definitely got the talent to show the world how important the environment and its impact to our life!
