Earth Day

Earth – The Only History and Future We Have!

earthday2005April 22, 2009 will mark the 39th anniversary of Earth Day. On the following link is a remarkable history on the birth of Earth Day, by the man who actually started it all, it is truly a ‘must read’. Once word got out it, the interest in the project spread like wildfire. It is staggering to think of the numbers of people, the involvement, and the honest ecological concern that people around the globe shared.

So, what happened? It sure would have been nice to be 39 years ahead of our current environmental situation. Who knows? Global warming could actually be a non-issue at this very moment. But, nooooo…! Our nearly four decades of waning interest is caused by a myriad of reasons. No sense in listing them, each one of us could name at least 5.

We no longer have the luxury of procrastinating, not even 1 day longer, much less 39 years. Earth has fever, and we better put forth a Herculean effort to nurse her back to health because who wants to be in the cross-hairs of a planet’s antibodies. Not pretty.

earth-dayThere is no doubt in my mind that the Earth can be healed. Putting in check or literally reversing the man-made rise in our planet’s temperature. Because of what we have now that we didn’t have 39 years ago – amazing technological advancement, a global brain trust of dedicated scientist and engineers aided by computing power that 4 decades ago would have been considered almost magical.

And now we have a secret weapon, something unforeseeable in their wildest dreams back in 1970. The World Wide Web. Allowing us to stay in touch, support, collaborate, exchange, information and solutions. But most of all, to communicate with each and never let one another forget how small and fragile our planet really is.

Earth Day used to be a major event when I was in elementary school, but it seems like interest has dwindled over the years. Optimistically, I hope it’s because we all do a little to help every day!

Earth Day started 39 years ago as a college teach in day. Very few knew about it except for the university professor that came up with the idea. 39 years later Earth Day is celebrated world wide – I call that progress. Sure we have problems in the world, some of which we are only now aware of because our science has gotten better and revealed them. Others because we’ve cleaned up our air quality in big cities and from cars from the very high levels in the 1970’s. We now know the dangers of lead and have outlawed its use. Alternative energy has come a long way too. In 1970 only the White House could afford to install solar panels, today in certain areas of the country a regular person can get solar panels on their home subsidized by their local government! Not to mention all of now affordable small scale solar applications out there for the rest of us. We should be celebrating our acheivements on Earth Day in order to give us the gumption to tackel our current problems tomorrow.

Hi Barbara … I believe that there is enough attention being given that this Earth Day will be a success.

  7. Linda Says:

Hi Condo … Yes, we have made some advancements. However, we could have been further along than we are today. Sure the achievements that have been made are truly instrumental, necessary and are appreciated. But we have a long way to go, baby!

  8. Pete Simmons Says:

What is success? Everyone goes home with a warm glow feeling they’ve achieved something? Forty years I’ve been campaigning for the environment, and apart from some greenwashing I see no sign that the human population have even begun to realise what’s at stake and how close we are to ecological meltdown. I give it fifty years and then bye-bye homo sapiens, and good riddance to the selfish naked ape who wasn’t anywhere like as intelligent as it thought. What, give up all the goodies our consuming lifestyle provides our egos with? No chance. I am only sad about the other, innocent, species which will be wiped out before hominids no longer stride over the world wreaking havoc. We have only ourselves to blame…

  9. Barbara Says:

I’m sure this Earth Day will be among the best ever. We have accomplished much in 39 years..and we are working hard toward a better tomorrow!

i also have seen interest dwindle regarding earth day. it seemed like we had more activities here locally in the past than we had this year.

  12. Linda Says:

Hi Pete … I feel your frustration but let’s not lose hope and our better nature. 🙂

  13. Linda Says:

Hi Barbara … The movement has started.

  14. Linda Says:

Hi Shane … the kids today really do understand what is happening and they are really picking up steam to get themselves into the greening movement.

  15. Linda Says:

Hi cady … Some places are really gung ho and others are probably dealing with the economy. I am confident that the activities slated for a weekday versus the weekend will create the aura of small participation.

  16. wilson Says:

Linda, if I didn’t get it wrong, the organic foods concept also has been launched on the same year as Earth Day did! Which means, the organic foods also celebrate the 39th anniversary very soon…

  18. Maureen Says:

We certainly have a long way to go. The issues have long been known and simply swept under the rug. More people now more than ever are gaining awareness- only time will tell how quickly we make smart decisions. The government must take a huge role– while we all wait, we can each do things that matter.

Hi Maureen … Yes, the government must make the commitment and it looks as they have. Now it is up to the rest of us to follow through.

Hi Scott … The media goes hot and cold on the environmental issues. But some are keeping up to date on the latest and greatest.

Hi LadyGrace … LOL! That’s ok, you will be hearing more.

Hi Heath … Welcome back! Yes, I see that they have been advertising Greensburg. I will be updating as I did last summer.
