A Good Drink For Earth Kids

Pure Water – Healthy Children

pure_water_2Brink is a 30 minute series on the Science Channel, hosted by Josh Zepps, that provides insight into breakthroughs in technology, research, inventions, discoveries and the mysteries of the scientific world. One particular episode had a segment on an incredibly easy, cheap, simplistic way of purifying drinking water.

Around the world about 5,000 children die every DAY from drinking dirty water. Now there is a revolutionary way to clean water that’s cheap, easy to use, and extremely portable. Just one packet of PUR can clean about 2.5 gallons (10 liters) of water. It was developed in part by Procter and Gamble‘s Greg Allgood, founder of the Children’s Safe Drinking Water Program.

Pur is a product that Procter and Gamble developed in collaboration with the CDC, (Center of Disease Control), as a way to treat contaminated water so that it is purified to prevent the illness and death that occurs in the developing world. Even purifying water that was once laced with contaminants such as fecal matter, cholera, and bacterias that cause typhoid fever and dysentery. This stuff removes 99.999999% of the bacteria.

P&G Pur in U.S.The ingredients in the Pur packets are the same used in municipal water treatment plants. Chlorine, which kills the bacteria and viruses, iron sulfate to coagulate causing particles to bind together in a heavy mass and fall to the bottom of the solution.

To show how this packet of powder (no larger than a credit card), works, Allgood and Zepps took a 2.5 gallon glass container of filthy, doggie-do laced water, added a packet of Pur, stirred for 5 minutes, filtered it through a cloth into another container, let it set for 20 minutes, then they both DRANK IT! Now that’s proving a point.

It can be made, packaged, shipped, distributed, and educate in the use thereof, for only 10 cents a packet, or 1 penny per liter of pure water.

And it’s not just for the developing world, after hurricane Katrina hit, the FDA approved the Pur packets for use right here in the U.S.

Terrible as they are, it’s too bad natural disasters are not the only time we have to worry about purified drinking water, thanks to man-made polluting disasters – everyday. But with products like this at least we can keep the children healthy while we battle for the health of our planet.

Very interesting and useful article, the related articles are every bit worthy of reading. Clean safe drinking water is a concern for all of us, so is the number of plastic water bottles generated each year. Please consider a reuseable container. Your community water supplier should be able to provide reports on the quality of water and any trace chemical contaminants.

Excellent resource Linda! Not only abroad but here at home as you state – for emergency situations! I’m going to click out to some of your resources to see if there is some sort of “movement” (like the Red Cross of drinking water). This would make an excellent fundraiser – again here and abroad.

The PUR packets certainly seem useful. I’m almost surprised P&G didn’t have these sooner since the water situation has been an issue. I’m glad more people are finding out about it-

  30. Linda Says:

Hi Julie … You are welcome. Remember to get you some packets for home, too!

  31. Linda Says:

Hi Heather … From what I understand, they are now in Canada! So, Walmart should have them available for ya! These would be excellent for your boat!

  32. Linda Says:

Hi Murray … For about the last 60 years, U.S. municipal water districts have been purifying their water systems with these same chemicals. Odds are, an American who has been raised on city water has drunk these chemicals everyday of their lives. The remains that this packet removes I do not believe will endanger the eco system.

  33. Linda Says:

Hi Sadie … I believe that they can. If not, they just can go down to the local walmart or target and get the packets there.

  34. Samantha & Mr. Tigger Says:

We need to get some of those for Hurricane season this year!! You never know when the the city water systems can get compromised! Thanks for sharing this with us!! You always have cool posts!
