The Embrio concept from BRP

one-wheel-cycle

The Embrio concept from Bombadier Recreational Products (better known for their more conventional forms of transport like jetskis) uses gyroscopic technology to balance itself and the rider on one central wheel. The smaller front wheel acts to stabilize the Embrio when stopped or traveling below 12mph. The Embrio uses its ‘training wheel’ until it hits 20 km/h, and then it becomes and extreme unicycle.

This hydrogen fuel cell powered, gyroscopically balanced, one-wheeled recreational and commuting vehicle provides an extraordinary vision of the kind of personal transport we could be using 10 years from now. The design brief for Bombadier EMBRIO Concept was to “create highly innovative, functional and exciting products to exceed people’s recreational needs” and find the “next thing” in recreational vehicles.

one-wheel-1The riding position will be similar to a motorcycle with a complex series of sensors and gyroscopes balancing passengers on the single wheel. The rider activates a trigger on the left handlebar to accelerate and turns are made by shifting body-weight rather than actually steering.

The Concept is constructed from lightweight materials including Polypropylene, Santoprene, nylon (injection moulding), aluminum (stamping, die casting and robotic assembly), magnesium (casting) and the use of fuel cell technology and recycling of aluminum and polyethylene is designed to make the Bombardier EMBRIO an eco-friendly design throughout its life cycle.

I think it is neat lookin! Would you like one?

That’s really cool. I would love to have one. But you know when and if they are sold to the public, they will be super expensive. But it would be funny to see people riding around in those things.

Hi Linda – My family is totally amazed by this little machine. They saw your post and got quite excited by it – they were wondering how fast it goes.

    Very interesting site.

I love the fuel cell and the novelty of it. Since the system is controlled by computer though, I would want to make sure it was not running on Windows. The “blue screen of death” might take on a new meaning zooming down the road on one wheel. 🙂

    Namaste

Hi lunaticq … You know, they will keep the price unknown until they are ready to sell it. Maybe with all of the interest shown, they will keep the price low enough where everyone can buy it.

Hi Wilson … Not sure it would run on ice unless that lone tire had some spikes on it or something!
