Today Forced Green celebrates it’s 1st birthday. Born out of the concern for our environment and our planet as a whole. Dedicated to bringing information, small/large, technical/simple, any data that Earth’s people can utilize to help their Planet Mother (and her children), heal, survive, thrive.
Named ‘FORCED’ Green because after decades of abuse, neglect, and treating Earth as though she is the size of Jupiter, (still no excuse if she were), our planet was, (still is), in dire straits. We were blindly speeding towards unimaginable consequences, (more…)
Made in 1964, ‘The Incredible Mr. Limpet‘, a film set during World War II is about a man named Henry Limpet, who would rather be a fish than human. One day his dream comes true suddenly when he falls off the pier at Coney Island and transforms into a fish. From this point Henry finds his destiny, finding true love and working for the US Navy to help defeat Nazis submarines with a super-sonic roar. I loved this movie when I was a kid. Don Knotts looked astonishingly like his animated fish character, Mr. Limpet.
So, what’s this got to do with an environmental blog, you ask? Well, a school of mechanical, battery-powered robots in the shape of fish, that look surprisingly like a bunch of Mr. Limpets (without the glasses), will be released into the waters in the northern Spanish port of Gijon to help monitor pollution. Chosen because port authorities there had expressed an interest in the technology, and assisted with a 2.5-million-pound ($3.6 million) grant from the European Union, allows the robotic fish to patrol the harbor. Thursday the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency made available the most recent reporting on the amount of toxic chemicals released into the U.S. environment. According to the EPA’s Toxics Release Inventory (TRI), the latest data, from the calendar year 2007, show an overall decrease of five percent in releases since 2006. Releases to air decreased seven percent and releases to water decreased five percent.
The report shows increases in the releases of persistent, bioaccumulative, and toxic chemicals like lead, dioxin, mercury and PCBs. Overall PBTs releases increased one percent. The increases were primarily due to a handful of facilities, and most of the releases reported were not to the air or water. (more…)
Yesterday, President Barack Obama announced a $2.4 billion program to boost development of plug-in electric vehicles in the U.S., including grants to finance domestic production of auto batteries. Out of that total, $1.5 billion is available for U.S. battery manufacturing and $500 million for related technology, such as electric motors. He said the Department of Energy has now started taking grant proposals from electric-vehicle battery makers.
Here’s a little data on how the market is coming along:
Chrysler is building 100 all-electric cars by the end of this year and plans to have four electric models on the road in 2013. Like the Chrysler Town & CountryEV. A plan that will certainly remains to be seen. (more…)
Transports, Filters, and Stores Water for the Developing World
Do you know the world’s leading cause of death? The answer is, waterborne diseases. If clean drinking water is not available, then you WILL drink whatever is. Even if you have to traverse a long, time-consuming, laborious distance, everyday to get it. Even if, after all the work to get this water, it could cause you or a member of your family to die. But, without it, you die. According to the W.H.O., 1.1 billion people have no access to any type of improved drinking source of water.
But, what if…..
In its present configuration it is not a feasible solution for most developing communities due to production costs and durability. But in fairness to the IDEO team, they have stated that, “In its current state, the Aquaduct is a prototype aimed squarely at demonstrating a concept and raising awareness around the issues of clean water in developing countries. The Aquaduct team plans to continue the concept’s development into an economically and technologically viable solution that addresses challenges such as cost, suitable purification technologies, and the logistics of addressing an issue that [affects] billions.”
