Fly The Greener Skies

nasa-wingsThe X-48B Blended Wing Body

Despite the best efforts of aeronautical engineers, conventional airliners are extremely loud, heavy, gas guzzling, and polluting. Now, imagine a future where the common mode of air travel is a fuel efficient, light weight, flying wing. An idea first suggested by Frederick Handley Page 48 years ago, has finally become a reality.

Designated as the X-48B Blended Wing Body (BWB). In a collaborative effort, Boeing, NASA, and the Air Force, culminated years of research, design, construction, wind tunnel and ground tests into numerous successful test flights at the Dryden Flight Research Center on Edwards Air Force Base, Calif.

One advantage Boeing engineers say the concept has over conventional aircraft is that it’s about 30 percent more fuel efficient than an airplane of similar size that carries the same payload. The entire fuselage becomes the means of lift. Made of plastic, with areas of the surface punctured with tiny holes to reduce drag, the wings are much lighter and so more fuel efficient, and the engines are mounted on top to deflect noise away from the ground. nasa-wings1

The futuristic light weight airframe is a unique merger of efficient advanced wings and a wide airfoil-shaped body, causing the aircraft to generate lift-to-drag ratios, thereby increasing fuel economy.

The result could bring aircraft emissions below today’s levels by 2025, despite an expected doubling in the amount of passenger air traffic.

Hi Barb…A couple of years ago, a Stealth Fighter Jet flew over our house…no sound, but I happened to be outside gardening when a huge shadow passed over me, I glanced up quickly and was amazed to see this huge black aircraft…It took me a minute to realize that we were NOT being invaded and remembered reading about it. The plane you show on your post looks, in style, like the Stealth. Will it be “passenger” friendly, or is it designed for military use?

Hi Judy …. This is Linda, not Barbara, with Forced Green. This will be for commericial (Boeing), scientific (NASA) and military (Air Force). So every avenue of air travel should be enhanced by this new, efficient aircraft. What a better way to clean up our skies. Come back again.

My guess is now that, now that the oil companies aren’t running the country, this design, as well as lots of great eco-friendly designs that got squashed in the past, are going to start popping out of the woodwork!

Regarding Smashies: my press release says that they go for $1.49 a piece; however, if you go to their website and click on “buy now” they are selling them in packs of 10 for $9.99. I think that’s a great deal.
