Don’t You Just Love It!

Norwegian Wind Power

The Scandinavian country has the longest coastline in Europe and lots of strong wind. Norway’s Oil and Energy Minister released a 30 page report by the Energy Council stating: “Norway ought to have access of up to 40 terrawatt hours of renewable energy by 2020-2025, of which about half would come from offshore wind power.”

Welcome Back!

The number of bald eagle breeding pairs in the lower 48 states increased from nearly 500 in 1963 to nearly 10,000 in 2006, according to the U.S. Fishand Wildlife Service, which attributes the comeback to the U.S. ban in 1972 of the pesticide DDT, along with the bird’s protection under the Endangered Species Act.

Make Paper Obsolete

Imagine curling up on the couch with the morning paper and then using the same sheet of paper to read the latest novel by your favorite author. That’s one possibility of electronic paper, a flexible display that looks very much like real paper but can be reused over and over. The display contains many tiny microcapsules filled with particles that carry electric charges bonded to a steel foil. Each microcapsule has white and black particles that are associated with either a positive or negative charge. Depending on which charge is applied; the black or white particles surface displaying different patterns. In the United States alone, more than 55 million newspapers are sold each weekday.

and Tides

New York City’s East River is now in the process of becoming the test bed for six tide-powered turbines, and Portugal’s reliance on waves in a new project is expected to produce enough power for more than 1,500 homes.

Cool Shades

Shade trees planted within 60 feet on the west and 40 feet of the south sides of a house in a hot part of California can reduce a homeowner’s summertime electric bill by about $25 a year, researchers found. While that might not sound like much, if employed by many homes in a state, the overall savings of electricity would be significant.

MIT Researchers Claim 50% Increase in Solar-Cell Output

A team of physicists and engineers at MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) claims that sandwiching a solar cell between an antireflective coating on the front and a combination of reflective coatings and a diffraction grating on the back can increase the cell’s output by as much as 50% for a 2-micron-thick cell. The aim of the coatings and grating is to keep photons of incoming light bouncing around longer within the thin silicon cell, thereby increasing the likelihood that they will deposit their energy and produce a current rather than just escaping back out into
the surrounding air.

We’re fortunate to have breeding pairs of both bald and golden eagles within a few miles of our little farm. Every once in a while they come quite close (with a 100 yards of so) of us in pursuit of prey or carion.
