Its That Time!
Did you turn your clocks back this morning? It is that time of year where we
gain back that hour we lost last spring! A true sign that winter is a coming.
Today is the change the clocks day on everything you have. Fortunately, most
computers do it for you. The clocks in cars, vcrs (should you still have one),
wall clocks, etc. have you visiting them for the change. Replacing batteries.
The only states that do not participate in daylight savings time is Hawaii and
Arizona. Why? Hawaii has never observed daylight saving time, as its tropical
latitude means its daylight hours stay fairly constant year-round. Arizona likewise
has not observed daylight saving time since 1967 because the extra daylight in the
summer would just mean more energy consumption to keep the desert state’s residents
cool.
Then in 2007, the Energy Policy Act of 2005 gave 4 weeks additional to daylight
savings time. It starts 3 weeks earlier in Spring and 1 week later in Fall. It
was decided that having more daylight hours would help farmers, retailers, sporting
events, schools, etc.
Not everyone is enthusiastic about daylight savings time. Alaska is trying to
stop due to the summer to winter change is extreme for them at their northerly
latitude. Florida is looking to abolish it due to the same reason as Arizona,
cooling is longer due to their southerly latitude. Indiana has only the western
part of the state utilizing daylight savings time. Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin
Islands do not participate either.
So, here is a question I have been wondering about. Does the rest of the world
participate?

We do here in Australia (although not all states)
I love it…I love being able to have those extra few hours of light. It always feels like a fuller day somehow.

Hi Bob … Ok, does that mean all of Canada? I bet your switch from fall to winter is quite severe as well.
Hi Leanne … glad to hear from ya!!! I like it as well. I get more done but I wish it would be cooler versus blooming hot!

Hi Linda,
I like the extra hour of sleep. It still always seems like there is not enough hours in a day to get everything done that I need to do!

Gosh, am I the silly one here who DOESN’T like the change? I wish they’d keep one constant time whether it’s EST or EDT. It takes my body a month before it gets regulated. I grew up with EST and when the street lights came on at night, it was time to go home no matter what time it was. However had we been on EDT, I wouldn’t have had to go home until about 10:00 and that was past my bedtime! LOL

And all this time I just thought it was because we Arizonan’s didn’t want to conform – I have always thought it was weird that the rest of the country changed time and we didn’t.

It’s supposed to save energy but I don’t understand how because now that it gets dark around 5:00 I have to turn on all of the lights so I don’t bump into things.
