Another Recycling Tip

About 40 percent of the trash you create that is put into the landfills is made up
of paper products.

Alot of us are doing our thing by recycling newspapers and plain paper, but there
is still more we can do including a couple of steps that you may not of thought
about.

30 percent of timber is being used to create paper, it is important to find ways
to conserve what we use by starting at the ATM. Many of us take the receipt from
the ATM, look at the balance, stuff it in our pockets or purses only to rip it up
later and throw it away. Did you know that approximately 8 billion transactions
are done on ATMs each year? If no one took an ATM receipt it would save 2 billion feet of
paper. That is enough to circle the earth 15 times. Will it make a difference?

Lets take a look at some numbers. It takes 600,000 tons of paper each year to
produce the receipts we get from our bank, ATMs, gas stations, and retailers.

If you break it down ….

* 9 million trees

* Water to supply 100 homes

* 232 million gallons of oil

So, if you can, check your balances on the screen of the ATM or online. You can
always decline the receipt from the ATMs and gas stations. You can have your bank
send your monthly statement via email.

Every little bit helps.

Take a look at this when you have a moment!

This is great information to help with awareness and put things into perspective. I had heard somewhere that the top 2 paper wasters were ATM receipts as you mentioned and also napkins. In fast food restaurants or takeout places for example, people grab an inch worth of napkins instead of just 1 or 2. I no longer get ATM receipts due to online banking and take 1 napkin when possible! Every bit helps-

Hi Linda – That is amazing how much paper is wasted just my ATM receipts alone. I like the idea of having the bank email all transactions.

Hi Barbara … Banking online has really gotten high tech but user friendly. I highly suggest it to all. It is very protected with very good security so nothing is up for grabs for scammers!
