An Eco Rock Singer

The stylings of Jack Johnson who is a singer and songwriter. He is not one
of the musicians who wreck hotel rooms, smash their guitar to smithereens,
or the normal shenanigans. He is just the opposite. He is setting an example
of using a completely carbon neutral platform for his tours or commonly known
as “going green”.

He refuses to tour in the winter as that is when the best waves hit his native
Hawaii islands. He is a low keyed individual of the likes of Paul Simon.

He likes to play on stage barefoot, unplugged, 33 years old and is going
to the top of the charts. His path to fame is really unique.

He is self taught on the guitar (something to do when the waves are not inviting)
and starting writing his own ballads. Before long, his songs were being
bootlegged all over the islands. He became popular and began touring the world.

He noticed as his group kept growing and that the footprint they had was
getting bigger. When he saw Neil Young and Willie Nelson fuel their buses with
biofuel, Jack took it to the next level.

He built a solar powered studio. Used his rock star leverage to demand a
carbon neutral tour. Instead of asking for green m & m’s, he asks for recycling
stations and green buffets. All of the food on tour is from local farms along
with the seafood. Tour T-shirts are organic cotton. The venues must promise
to offset their electricity use by investing in wind power or protecting a rain
forest.

He believes in recycling, drinking out of reusable bottles. He is among a group
of rock stars that are thoughtful of mother earth. Some of them include Dave
Matthews, Jon Mayer, and Moon 5 who are working with a green tour company called
Reverb, founded by Guster guitarist, Adam Gardner. They helped build Jack’s
village green where fans who car pool to the show get perks, learn about issues
and maybe sign a petition. Sometimes the message is not heard by the kids but
some do.

Music can change the world.

Nice write-up on JJ. I’ve been a long time fan since his pre-iTunes days (when he really got first noticed). Growing up in San Diego he often came to the west coast to play before a larger audience.

If you are looking for similar artists check out his label Brushfire Records. Most of those artists tour with him.

Also if you get a chance to see JJ live, don’t pass it up!!! I highly recommend learning his songs because his concerts are like a giant sing-a-long. I missed his most recent show nearby (4 hours away), and I regret it.

If you don’t know who Jack Johnson is, but saw the Curious George movie, he’s the guy who wrote and performed all of the music in it.

    Great guy, great artist.

    Hi Linda,

Can you imagine what a powerful message he will send to his audience? Another vote for “green”. That says a lot about him.

    Hey Linda,

What a great article on JJ. One of my favorites and of course Dave Matthews. “Green” is getting around
    big time!

Hi Linda. It is inspiring to see people doing so much for the environment, especially someone famous. More people tend to listen and follow in their footsteps.

I soooo love this. Lots of kids worship their music “idols”, and to have musicians point the way to being green is awesome!!! Not to mention the fact that I love JJ and Dm’s music!!

There was an article in one of our alternative newspapers about many artists that play in our city require the different venues (per part of the performance contract. Having various requirements is standard practise) to help green their tours.

I just saw the touring company of The Lion King and saw in the program that they tour green through http://www.clarktransfer.com/green. Mostly through buying offsets (I have mixed feeling about those) but their offsets do fund specific projects that are listed on the company’s web site like helping fund windmills for family farms in Minnesota and South Dakota.

I got to see him in concert and he really inspired me to take my Eco-friendliness to the next level. i bought a reusable water bottle that i use every day because of the water fill up station at his concerts. I make my family recycle paper and cans, in the small town i live in there is no where to recycle water bottles :-(. I think what he is doing is really awesome. I love his song Enemy. I think it is a metaphor of the ruin mankind has done to the earth. But who knows? nice article !!

Hi Kim … It is very cool, isn’t it!

Hi Condo … I wonder why only Minnesota and South
Dakota? Maybe it is just the start of something big! šŸ™‚

Hi Kyle … I am really jealous that you got to go to his concert. But I am happy that you have joined the going green movement. Keep up the good work!

Hi Wilson … Thanks! he is talented!
