Trivia for the Day!
World energy consumption is expected to increase 50% by 2030
The energy from all fossil fuels ever used by humans equals 30 days of sunshine.
In the time it takes to read this sentence, 507 tons has been dumped in landfills.
Just over 100 years ago, gasoline was a waste product in the manufacturing process
for kerosene.
The World’s 1.3 billion head of cattle produce more green house gases than all the
cars, trains, and other forms of transportation put together.
Every year, We:
- Dump 1.3 trillion gallons of raw sewage.
- Throw away 50 million tons of paper.
- Add 31 million tons of U.S. home construction waste to landfills
- Toss enough glass containers to fill the Chicago Sears Tower over 60 times
- Produce enough plastic film to shrink wrap Texas – (What?? If that
happens someone please run over and poke some holes in it for me!)

Staggering statistics! I did a recycling presentation for my son’s cub scout group this spring, and it was really eye-opening. What was cool was that in preparing for it, my two youngest kids helped out, and they really got into some of the statistics. I think that’s great, and hopefully the more kids that take even a slight interest will help our planet down the road.
Good luck with the bubble wrap!!!

Hi Linda,
I know TOO much is being dumped in landfills, but a lot of people just don’t care. If each of us could take just a little bit of extra time to sort our garbage, what a difference we could make.
When we had our recycling business we recycled tons of construction waste + other wood waste. We ended up with a completely resalable product and had very little waste. It felt so good when we were able to make that contribution.

Hi Barbara … Happy 4th to you as well. WOW, learn something new everyday! I bet the construction sites are still being wasteful despite your efforts!

Yikes! So many painful statistics to face. I love red meat, but have reduced my consumption to once a week or less. Not only do cows produce greenhouse gasses, but they also take a ton of water to keep alive.
As for construction, in Steamboat Springs, CO we recycle as much building materials as possible. An organization organizes it all they redistributes it. Every little bit helps, doesn’t it?

Hi Dagny … that is really cool to hear that and
yes! it does help! As we all get a little educated to what we can do, the earth will get better little by little!
