Yes, fuel up in the Morning!

Sometimes I wonder who our government really works for, the people or big business.
More precisely, Big Oil.

The U. S. Government sets gas pumps to 60 degrees F.  That means gas is being
dispensed as if it is always 60 degrees outside.  Since gas contracts in cooler
temperatures, this standard may work in Iceland, but here in the Tropic of Hades,
it is grossly unfair.  In places, like Texas, the temperature is alot higher in those
underground gas tanks.  Especially in the late afternoon, we are often in the mid to
high 90’s, even hotter.  There are 12 states (Texas included), which has average fuel
temperatures of more than 10 degrees ABOVE government standards.  So that gas is in an
expanded state, which means a cost difference of up to 2 percent or 3 cents or better
on every gallon.  In other words, you are not receiving what you are paying for.

Consumer advocates wants U. S. Fuel retailers to install nozzles that counterbalance
temperature changes.  Which you would think the government would have mandated a
looooooong time ago.  But officials say, (here we go again!), this would push gas
prices even higher.  Of course, -figures-,  a fish can fart in the ocean and gas
prices go up!

Even if the new nozzles were in place, the price of gas is still highway robbery!

So, the bottom line, fuel up in the morning if at all possible. But if your overnight
temperatures do not go below 60, you are still getting screwed at the pump.

Tips on Filling Fuel in Your Vehicles

ONLY BUY OR FILL UP YOUR VEHICLES IN THE EARLY MORNING WHEN THE GROUND TEMPERATURE IS STILL COLD. Remember that all service stations have their storage tanks buried below ground. The colder the ground, the denser the fuel, when it gets warmer petrol expands, so buying in the afternoon or in the evening…. Your litre is not exactly a litre.

In the petroleum business, the specific gravity and the temperature of the petrol, diesel and jet fuel, ethanol and other petroleum products play an important role. A 1degree rise in temperature is a big deal for this business.
But the service stations do not have temperature compensation at the pumps.

If you look, you will see that the trigger has three (3) stages: low, middle, and high. In slow mode, you should be pumping on low speed, thereby minimizing the vapours that are created, while you are pumping. All hoses at the pump have a vapour return. If you are pumping on the fast rate, some of the liquid that goes to your tank becomes vapour. Those vapours are being sucked up and back into the underground storage tank so you’re getting less worth for your money.

The reason for this is, the more fuel you have in your tank, the less air occupying its empty space. Petrol evaporates faster than you can
Imagine. Petroleum storage tanks have an internal floating roof. This roof serves as zero clearance between the petrol and the atmosphere, so it minimizes the evaporation.

Unlike service stations, here where I work, every truck that we load is temperature compensated, so that every litre is actually the exact amount.

ANOTHER REMINDER, IF THERE IS A FUEL TRUCK PUMPING INTO THE STORAGE TANKS, WHEN YOU STOP TO BUY, DO NOT FILL UP – most likely the petrol/diesel is being stirred up as the fuel is being delivered, and you might pick up some of the dirt that normally settles on the bottom.

Also, when it comes out at 60ish degrees (or more if you are in a warmer climate), and your tank is at 90ish, it expands and poof, there goes some of the gas you just filled. If you don’t top off it is not as bad, but that is something that most of you can do by not topping off. I don’t get as much control since in Oregon we are not allowed to pump our own gas.

Hi Diane …. yep, it gets more interesting by the day!

Hi Cyprus .. thanks for the additional information.

    Hi Vikki … Cheating abound!

Hi Jason … I did not know that you cannot pump your own gas in Oregon! So, you still have gas attendants? WOW!

  6. Barbara Swafford Says:

    Hi Linda,

I’m in Oregon too. No pumping our own gas.

This is such a valuable post. I love what you said and also what Cyprus added. We need all the help we can get. Thank you!

Hey Leanne, you bet your sweet bippy! It has been a thing of the past here in Texas for a long while!
Oregon just let me know that they still have gas attendants which is a novelty nowadays. Thanks for coming by!

  11. SolReka Says:

    Ref gas attendants

That explains everything. And there’s me thinking it was all a conspiracy, when in fact the real reason for the extortionate gas prices is because we have to pay extra so that our friends in Oregon can have the luxury of remaining in their cars whilst having a gas attendant do the dirty work.

Charming. It’s alright for some lol

Gas attendants – Bet they live like kings, no wonder they wipe your windscreens with a smile on their face. Loadsa money lol

In England, we don’t have the luxury of garage boys, they make us get out of our cars and fill up our tanks manually – what a liberty.

You’d think with the cost of petrol like it is, the petrol stations would at least put on a dance, or a show for us, or some form of entertainment. To help numb the pain and the fact that we are getting ripped off by the oil cabals – grrrrrr. Roll on 2012

Hey, now there’s an idea – lapdancing petrol attendants- hmmm 🙂

Hey SolReka….. That may not work in Oregon but I bet it would in your part of the world!

  15. SolReka Says:

    Give it time Linda

When they start charging $20 for a gallon of petrol, they’ll do anything to keep the wool over our eyes.

    You’ll see

They’ll change the name from Shell garages, to sexy Sarah gogo dancers emporium lol
