Today is a few tidbits that I thought might be useful information.
There are 49 million disposable diapers dumped into landfills every DAY and it takes
500 years for them to decompose. That means your great, great, great (you get the
picture) grandchildren’s diapers will start before your baby’s diapers disappear.
Cloth diapers are chemical free and switching to cloth will reduce waste by over
1/2 ton per baby per year. (more…)

I am sure that your Crocs are getting a little worn by now. The bottoms are
starting to smooth out and are probably scratched, stained, etc.
Why not recycle them?
Your local Crocs retailer has a recycle bin and/or you can ship them to Soles
United.
Soles United (a non-profit organization) takes them and recycles the shoes, boxes them up and ships them out to organizations that can make sure the shoes reach
those who need them. Their goal is to donate more than two million
pairs of recycled Crocs shoes worldwide. They are also helped by
Brother’s Brother Foundation and Feed the Children.
Go to http://www.solesunited.com and really see how they work!
Their next stop is to bring 10,000 pairs to Haiti.
Why not join the effort!

On May 4, 2007 Greensburg, Kansas was ravaged by a tornado, and most of its 1,400
residents were left homeless. Ninety-five percent of the town was destroyed. But
with the hearts of champions and bold spirits, they looked past their pain and
suffering and saw hope in the devastation. With literally a clean slate to work with,
they are committed to rebuilding their town into the ultimate energy-efficient
community. (more…)

At McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, a team of scientists are working on an
ingenious way of solving the low efficiency problem of modern solar panels by growing
nanowires. Todays silicon based solar cells converts into electricity only 10 to 15
percent of the energy they absorb.
To put a nanowire into prospective for you:
1 nanometer = 1 billionth of a meter
800 nanometers = width of a human hair
100 nanometers = width of a nanowire
1/100th of a human hair = heigth of a nano wire (more…)

WASTED is a 30 minute show on the Planet Green Channel. The host (Annabelle Guriwitch
and Holter Graham), go into peoples homes and teach them how to cut down on their
waste thereby lowering their ecological footprint.
They developed an internationally recognized, ecological footprint calculator that
measures factors like waste, energy and fuel consumption and translates that data into
land size.
For example, in the episode I watched, a couple in an 1300 sq. ft. apartment in New
York City, calculated like this. Their living space is 0.03 acres, which should be
their footprint. However, their eco-footprint = 49.8 acres, 1600 times the size of
their property. (more…)

Last month I told you about a new channel coming to cable June 1st called Planet
Green.
Well, it is here and it is good. I caught a show on there called Wasted. But, I will
tell you about that tomorrow. In the meantime, listen to this.
A town called Greensburg, Kansas was literally wiped off the map by a tornado last
year. Apparently, these people have dedicated themselves to rebuilding their town -
TOTALLY GREEN. (more…)
