Did Ya Know!

Today is a few tidbits that I thought might be useful information.

There are 49 million disposable diapers dumped into landfills every DAY and it takes
500 years for them to decompose. That means your great, great, great (you get the
picture) grandchildren’s diapers will start before your baby’s diapers disappear.
Cloth diapers are chemical free and switching to cloth will reduce waste by over
1/2 ton per baby per year.

Each year Americans toss out enough paper, plastic, and styrofoam disposable dishes
to circle the equator over 300 times!

Washing clothes in cold water is just as effective as using hot water.

A leaky water faucet dripping at a rate of one drop per second can waste up to 2,700
gallons of water per year.

If everybody in America replaced just 1 bottle of petroleum based dish soap, it would
save 86,000 barrels of oil. That is enough to heat 4,900 homes for a year..

It takes just a penny an hour to run a ceiling fan. Use the reverse switch for the
season. Pull the warm air up and out for summer. Push the warm air down for winter.
Circulate the air. Help out your heating and cooling systems.

These are great tips Linda. Sometimes all it takes is a minor adjustment in our actions to make a huge difference.
I am in Australia and where I live we have had severe water restrictions for years…no car washing, no watering gardens and a 150 litre per person per day limit. We have been able to go back to a lower level restriction recently but I know I am still very mindful of water usage!

You bet! I know water is scarce down there but are they looking at desalinization down there in Oz land? It might make your lives a little easier…

    Hey Linda!

So I’m willing to try washing with cold water this week. I’ll have to see whether it’s really as effective as warm or not.

But I’m still leaving my lawnmower running 24/7 to see if I can’t warm up MY part of the globe! My bee’s knees are still shaking from the cold JUNuary weather here in Boardman Country! 🙂

I’ll let you know on the laundry.

    Talk soon,

I’ve started a research project into the subject of soap. Did you know that over 100 plants have parts that can be used as a soap replacement?

The Romans used olive oil which they applied and then scrape back off again – apparently it’s strangely effective.

Hi Barbara… I know, the length truly amazed me.

Hi Matt…. I knew that some plants could be used but not over 100.

How do you determine if your dish soap is petroleum based dish soap? In the US dish soap manufacturers aren’t required to list all of the ingredients to keep trade secrets I grabbed the bottle from the kitchen and it just says, “No phosphates.”
